Until 2018, recyclables collected in and for the U.S. were shipped to China for processing. But all the sudden, China stopped taking the recycling, which caused a chain reaction of problems. The cost of recycling for towns and cities exploded.
Local governments are forced to find new ways to create budgets to address the management of waste and recyclables, or worse, overall canceling their efforts to have working concepts in place.
This exposed the fundamental problems how the US recycles. Proven concepts haven’t been established till today. The amount of waste and recyclables is growing year by year without having the flood of plastic solved.
The problem: an uncontrolled overflow of plastic, disposable products bombarding our homes and communities endlessly.
Cities and towns already bear the burden of disposing municipality waste now have to additionally manage the stream of litter these products create. Recycling costs skyrocket. Meanwhile, plastic, packaging and recyclables producers are not held responsible. Production of these polluting products is in full swing increasing each year.
Municipalities are facing problems to cover the cost of the current waste and recyclables management system. Toxic landfills are growing faster than ever. And the environmental pollution harming humans and animals tougher each year.
Paper and plastic producers must be hold accountable for the pollution they are generating and forcing into communities and homes.
Most of the cheap plastic and paper packaging is thrown into recycling bins having little or no value so far. It’s perfect for using it once but terrible for recycling.
For the past decade, U.S. recycling companies confidently encouraged municipalities to approve recycling systems that collected paper, plastic, glass, and metal altogether into one bin. All different materials were mixed.
It’s more convenient to only have to deal with one bin then different ones for different recyclables. The truth is collecting and separating all of these elements coming in in one big waste stream (everything collected in only one bin) makes it practically impossible to sort and recycle these materials on a professional level yet to say efficiently.
But the motives to keep everything as is are simple:
- China was making money through Chinese recycling entities having the waste mix painfully sorted by cheap labor
- US residents felt environmentally responsible “doing something good”
- and producers of packaging kept making money by producing more trash
- China paid for taking the waste mix including all forms of recyclables
- the revenue coming from China covered the cost of recycling program efforts
Since 2018 China refuses to import US waste the crisis is in full swing and so far, there is no solution in sight. It’s an endless spiral spinning faster each year.
The former exported problem is now turning into a massive out of control disaster forcing the tax payers to pay for it – literally.
Municipalities used to get money from China for exporting their recyclables are now paying several times that amount for their recycling programs.
That’s because of a failing system. No proven concept is in place to collect, sort and recycle recyclables. Recyclables have no place to go.
Waste companies collect and sort the recycling, but without a concept there is no place to dispose the waste. The recycling waste keeps piling up, and the price for it continues to rise steeply, too.
Example:
Stanford, Connecticut; the city’s recycling contract skyrocketed from a $95,000 surplus to a cost of $700,000 per year!
Tax payers have to pick up this gigantic bill.
Boston’s recycling is predicted to rise from $35 to $150 a ton.
Worcester, Massachusetts’s recycling costs are currently $78 a ton – $10 higher than trash disposal.
In Germany, companies like Coca-Cola, Proctor & Gamble, Unilever, etc. are held responsible as producers of such packaging materials.
Producers have to pay for the packaging material they produce.
No packaging material leaves any production facilities in Germany without being paid for.
The money is used to ensure that those materials are collected, sorted and recycled responsibly.
Cities and towns are able to manage the stream of recyclables maturely, efficient and responsible.
Taxpayers get a relief, and the environment gets a chance to recover.
Landfills belong to the past. The toxic times and uncontrolled streams of all different kinds of waste are over.
Clean, sustainable solutions are in place in Germany.
Recyclables rates of more than 85% each year are easily reached and constantly increase.
Sustainable Solutions will do the same for you.

Producers of cheap plastic and paper packages are happily producing more and more volume each year increasing their sales but the burden of dealing with this overflowing stream of recycling and its costs is left with the cities and towns –
which means taxpayers have to cover the bill for such an irresponsible and failing system.
These budget changes are becoming the new normal, because yet there is no concept in place how to manage efficiently these gigantic masses of recyclables.
Producers must pay for the recycling; millions of tons of plastic and paper packages filling landfills, recycling bins, the environment and oceans. (12 million tons of plastic waste is dumped into the oceans each year. That is one truck load of plastic every minute!)
The USA is the second largest producer of plastic waste in the world with only 4% of the global population.
The producers have to pay for the packaging material they produce.
The money is used to ensure that those materials are collected, sorted and recycled responsibly. Cities and towns will be able to manage recyclables maturely, taxpayers get a relief, and the environment gets a chance to recover.
We evaluate the current process of municipal waste management, particularly the recycling part in solid waste municipalities.
With more than 30 years of experience in operating closed cycles we analyze the existing waste management process. Following our custom made strategy to meet your goals we implement the concept and financial structure that is needed to operate a successful closed cycle.
With our implementation of a successful operating closed cycle we guarantee you the achievement of your recycling goals within one year.
The increasing volume of waste is a major concern for humans and the environment.
The best way to deal with this problem is to reduce and therefore recycle waste.
A pro active plan for recycling needs to be implemented to divert more materials away from the waste stream.
Without a successfully proven financial plan any recycling system will fail.
We provide you with an operational and efficient financial concept permitting the successful implementation of a closed cycle.
Implementing a closed cycle is generating additional business.
